Resource Centre , Halifax, has been given a ringing endorsement by would-be Prime Minister David Cameron. “It is an absolute shining example of how, by enabling communities to help themselves, we can knit together strong communities,” he said during a visit to Halifax. Mr Cameron and his wife, Samantha, spent more than an hour talking to users and staff at the charity, including those in the creche, craft group and computer room.
Sowerby Bridge pub is to be turned into a home. A previous planning application had been turned down but at the second time of asking councillors have agreed that the Stirk Bridge Inn is no longer viable as a pub. talks are to be held at Thrum Hall, Halifax, to try to avert a players’ strike over unpaid wages which is threatening to make Halifax Rugby League Football Club a laughing stock. Mounting cash problems and disappointing results have dogged the club all season. Last night’s Alliance League match degenerated into farce when fans arrived to find the gates locked and Halifax unable to raise a team. The match against Castleford eventually went ahead after a team of local amaeturs was assembled, but they lost 60-4.
years ago A big do- it-yourself job is being undertaken by Albert McArdle, of Hebden Bridge. He is demolishing his his former home at 14 Commercial Street, which is in a clearance area, to avoid having to pay demolition costs. He has got the house down to ground level but there is still another dwelling below, which is in Garden Street. Mr McArdle is selling the timber, stone and other scrap materials.
volume of short stories by Halifax author Dr Phyllis Bentley has been published under the title Tales of the West Riding. Five of the stories, spanning the years 1434 to 1962, are true short stories; the sixth, which occupies half the book, is a novel in miniature which ends in a violent climax.
