Brods ease through to Sheffield final clash

Middlesbro­ugh U-17 19 Old Brodleians 22 Brods will face Sheffield in the Yorkshire Cup final at Harrogate on Saturday after coming through a thrilling tie at Middlesbro­ugh. Brods held their own for the first 20 minutes with strong drives by Josh Forrest and Alex Christophe­r. However, Middlesbro­ugh scored a converted try to lead 7-0.

Brods failed to respond and missed tackles saw Boro score a second try for 14-0.

Brods collected their nerves and momentum and used their pace to respond with a try by Jimmy Hodkinson, Tom Wilson converting to make it 14-7 at half-time.

Middlesbro’ came out with the same determinat­ion, scoring quickly to secure their lead at 19-7. This seemed to re-ignite Brods and they saw their skills pay off with a great run down the wing for Tom Wilson to score.

Despite Boro’s attempts they were unable to keep Brods away from their half, captain Cole Wilson taking the next try, and Tom Wilson converting to level the score at 19-19.

With only five minutes remaining Brods were awarded a penalty which Tom Wilson successful­ly kicked. Rishworthi­ans u16s 5 York u16s 15 The biggest day in Rishies’ 10 year history ended in disappoint­ment as they lost out to York in ther Yorkshire Cup final at Hull Ionians RUFC.

The opening salvos were fairly even before York put Reds under pressure which paid off when they piled over but were deemed held up. From the subsequent scrum they crashed over for a converted try.

Reds missed a penalty before Sam Nunn was brought down five metres short. York were strong at the breakdown and awarded another penalty which they took for a 10-0 lead.

Great hands sent Ben Rooney down the wing, but a great tackle by the York winger saved a certain try before Fielden came through at an angle before looping a pass to Nunn, who drew his man and sent Ollie Marshall in at the corner to make it 10-5 at the break.

Momentum was slightly lost with an injury to Ollie Marshall, but Rishies still had most of the play.

However, they were hit with a sucker punch when, against the run of play, York scored an unconverte­d try through a well worked move to secure the win Old Brods under 10s and Old Rishworthi­ans produced a keenly contested match which finished nine tries each.

Both sides showed plenty of skill and endeavour which delighted their respective coaches.

Rishes opened up a 9-4 advantage with 10 minutes left.

What followed was a spectacle of speed, good hands, bodies on the line and teamwork from Brods to tie things up.
