Tyrer: Widnes’ Danny can be Fax loan star

-

Halifax centre Steve Tyrer has tipped on loan playmaker Danny Craven to make a success of his Shay switch ahead of Sunday’s Championship fixture against Doncaster at the Shay (3.0). Craven, who can play half back or full back, has joined Richard Marshall’s side on a season-long loan from Super League outfit Widnes and made his debut in last weekend’s 36-10 defeat at Sheffield.

But while Craven struggled to impress in an unusually disjointed team effort, Tyrer, who played alongside the 23 year old with the Vikings, is confident there are better days ahead.

“I wouldn’t read anything into last weekend; that’s not us, that’s not how we play and it’s not what we’re about,” said Tyrer.

“Danny was ill last week so only trained once, but I know him from playing with him when he was a kid at Widnes and he’s a very good player.

“He will give Scott (Murrell) a breather in terms of having to organise us, because that’s something he’s very good at.

“He’s got a good kicking game, which we saw glimpses of at Sheffield with his kick offs and stuff, he’s very quick and he’ll add a lot to the team.

“I think we’ll only see the best of him when he’s got to know us and got to know our calls and our plays.

“When he gets himself going, you’ll see a real good player; Widnes haven’t just signed him up for another three years for nothing.

“He’s got some stability now, he knows he’s going to be playing for us each week and he can concentrate on that.”

Tyrer himself has missed the last three games with medial ligament damage, but is optimistic he will be ready to return sooner rather than later.

“It’s pretty good; it’s healed up well, so I will hopefully back a week or two ahead of schedule,” said the threequarter.

“After that, it’s down to Richard to pick me but in the next game or two I should be ready; maybe Doncaster, definitely Leigh the week after.

“That’s the way I’m looking at it at the moment.”
