BINCONSIDERATE Fightback launched against litter louts

- By Jon Cronshaw

Communities across West Yorkshire have rolled-up their sleeves to stop the blight of the region’s litter. Events organised by community groups and local councils have seen residents picking litter, removing gum and cleaning graffiti.

In Wakefield, members of Pinders Heath Residents Association, which has held clean ups on their estate over the last three years, will hold two litter picks as part of the Clean Up Yorkshire campaign next month, on Wednesday June 10 and Sunday June 21.

The group won a £1,000 grant from Wakefield Council to fund litter picking equipment and bulbs, and received bin bags and high-vis vests from the Campaign to protect Rural England (CPRE), partners in the Clean Up Yorkshire Campaign.

They regularly collect a dozen bags of rubbish a time.

Group chair Peter Fenlon said: “From a financial point of view, if the area looks presentable, the value of your house goes up, but there’s a sense of satisfaction as well in the sense of community it fosters.

“If you clear away the litter, people will drop less. We’d love to see more people involved.”

Residents in Calderdale have also been taking part in its council-sponsored cleanup events.

The third annual Big Clean week saw Council teams take to areas in and around Halifax and the Lower and Upper Valley to blitz those spots identified in need of a clean sweep.

Council staff and volunteers targeted sites that are owned and managed by the council.

Community groups and volunteers helped out with the clean up, with equipment and bags were provided.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Coun Marcus Thompson, said: “After the winter months, some areas can look a bit tired, so these clean up days are a great way to make a difference in your local area.”
