Plumes of black smoke were sent billowing over the Halifax skyline as firefighters tackled a huge fire on moorland.

Fire crews battled a huge blaze on Swales Moor Road at Ploughcroft, above Boothtown, involving about 60 tons of woodchip, rubber and tyres.

Firefighters from Halifax, Brighouse, Illingworth and Elland were called to the incident at 4.40pm on Thursday.

Two hose jets and two ground monitors were at the fire.

Thick black smoke could bee seen from as far away as Liversedge.

Firefighters were at the scene late into Thursday evening as they extinguished the blaze.
