Students help the twin towns

- By Cassie Irving

Students from Calderdale College have designed a series of prints and fashion pieces inspired by and to celebrate Halifax’s relationship with its twin town Aachen. In March, Woolshops Shopping Centre set students the task of creating a textile display which represents Aachen in Germany, the twin town of Halifax.

They were given a photograph of the buildings in Aachen and asked to recreate it using their skills and ideas.

Jessica Gladwin, HND art and design student, said: “I am interested in surface pattern design for interiors and fashion.

“I was interested in taking part in this opportunity to create a garment that celebrated the twin towns of Halifax and Aachen.

“I have taken my inspiration from the buildings of both towns and have used the surface pattern technique of screen printing to create colour and shapes inspired by the artist and designer Sonia Delaunay.”

As well as fabric, fashion students were also asked to create garments inspired by both Halifax and Aachen.

Nicola King, HND art and design student, said: “I was excited to take part in this project as it enabled me to explore my interest in pattern design for interior and window displays.

“In this project I have combined a variety of surface pattern techniques, including print and transfer techniques to make pieces that were digitally printed to create a wall hanging.”

Jason Gregg, Woolshops Shopping Centre manager, said: “The students at Calderdale College are incredibly talented and at Woolshops we’re always happy to support local education.

“We can’t wait to see what the students have created and invite shoppers to come along and have a look themselves.

“We’re also in talks to see if the exhibition could be displayed in Aachen, which would be a wonderful opportunity for the students.”

The creations will be on display from Friday, May 29 for shoppers at Woolshops to enjoy.
