Over the week­end of June 5-7, South­gate Methodist Church is cel­e­brat­ing its cen­te­nary. On the Fri­day evening in­vited guests are in­vited to a pre­view evening at 7.30pm. On Satur­day the church build­ings will be open from 10am un­til 4pm when there will be on dis­play pho­to­graphs and bap­tismal and wed­ding reg­is­ters for the churches mak­ing up the present church. Or­gan­i­sa­tions which use the premises will be mount­ing dis­plays in the lower hall and there will be a film show of pho­to­graphs. In the church it­self there will be dis­plays by church or­gan­i­sa­tions and flower dis­plays in­clud­ing a rain­bow of flow­ers over the choir stalls. Re­fresh­ments (tea cof­fee and cake) will be avail­able. On Sun­day morn­ing church mem­bers led by the Stead­fast As­so­ci­a­tion will process from Cen­tral Hall to the church at 10am when wor­ship at 10.30am will be con­ducted by Chair­man of the West York­shire Dis­trict of the Methodist Church, the Rev­erend Roger Wal­ton. Fol­low­ing the ser­vice a hun­dred bal­loons will be re­leased fol­low­ing which cof­fee will be served fol­lowed by a lunch.

A ser­vice of cel­e­bra­tion in the evening will be con­ducted by the Rev­erend Colin Sher­wood. David Nor­cliffe gave a talk on ‘West Wadsworth 13502000’, at the Ryburn Val­ley His­tory So­ci­ety. Mr Nor­cliffe de­scribed how the geog­ra­phy in this small area has been af­fected by its in­dus­try.
