Cars melt in huge tyre blaze
Thick black smoke billowed over the sky of Greetland following a huge tyre fire. The blaze, which caused cars and camper vans to melt, happened at land behind Sunside Garage on Saddleworth Road.
Thick black smoke could be seen for miles and cars and caravans melted during a huge tyre fire in Greetland. Business owners have talked of their shock following the blaze in a compound behind Sunside Garage on Saddleworth Road, which happened just before 7pm on Wednesday.
The blaze, which saw heavy goods vehicles full of tyres destroyed, caused four cars, three camper vans and a caravan to melt.
It is too early to estimate the cost of the damage caused.
Nobody was injured in the blaze and firefighters said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of it.
Clyde Dawson, the owner of Tyres and Batteries, lost three containers of tyres in the blaze but still managed to open for business yesterday.
Mr Darson, 56, said: “We didn’t leave until about 6.20pm and I think it started at about 6.40pm.
“We had been working and had gone to the pub and one of the customers said ‘your place is on fire’. We went straight down and saw all the smoke, it looked really bad, but the fire brigade were there really quickly.
“It has caused damage, all the telephone lines have been burnt and then there were the three containers where we keep all the tyres. I don’t know how much it is going to cost, but we’ve managed to stay open.
“We don’t know what has happened, but we think it might have been rubbish that has set alight.”
Firefighters from Halifax, Illingworth and Rastrick were called to the fire at 7pm.
When they arrived the heavy goods vehicles and a fiberglass box trailer were on fire in a compound. The fire was threatening to spread to a yard which contained cars, camper vans, the caravan and gas canisters. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used six large jets to extinguish the blaze and contain it to the compound. However the heat of the fire did melt the cars, camper cans and caravan.
