Terriers and Brods pool their resources
Two of Calderdale’s strongest clubs, Yorkshire Terriers and Old Brodleians, have announced a linkup. Terriers have a reputation for developing good junior players and have enjoyed success at regional level.
Based at Brooksbank School in Elland, they have numerous teams in the West Yorkshire Junior League.
Old Brodleians, who have links with the rugby union club at Hipperholme, play senior netball in the West Yorkshire League and in the North Bridge Leisure Centre League on Mondays.
They also have a fine record for producing young players under coach Vicky Hellowell.
The new club is called Yorkshire Brods and has been registered with England Netball.
Brods already have a West Yorkshire League Premier Division place and the new club hopes to field another team in Division Two.
The plan is enter two more teams for the 2016/17 campaign.
Terriers’ award-winning coach Lee Davis said the aim was to continue the success of under 16s netball and ensure the young players made the transition to open age netball.
Structured coaching, good adult mentors and quality competition would enable them to do that.
She added: “Brods have made a generous request to join forces and utilise Yorkshire Terriers’ performance athletes to support this vision and regional growth.
“We are delighted to accept and share our talent, resources, athletes, coaches and officials across the board.”
She said training would be on Wednesday and Thursday evenings using Brooksbank School and Hipperholme Grammar.
Davis said the club was looking for kit sponsors and to kick off fund raising they would be running a bottle stall at Saturday’s Brodstock Music Festival at Woodhead with Overgate Hospice also benefitting.
