Rams stunning win is ‘best for a long time’

overs in fading light.

However, Khan launched the late assault and Morrison followed his lead by hitting four sixes off the penultimate over, two of them clearing the clubhouse.

Khan, who had earlier taken three wickets, completed the job with a couple of boundaries in the final over, the clincher coming off the game’s penultimate ball.

Long- serving opening batsman Larner said: “It was a brilliant penultimate over from Morro and an absolutely stunning game.

“I said ‘don’t go for it’, just make sure you don’t give them maximum points!”

Victory put Fields third but with only three points separating a top five which also includes Liversedge, Larner expects a tight battle for honours.

“It is going to be a dogfight to the end,” he said.

Fields travel to Wakefield St Michael’s tomorrow, when their captaincy merry-goround continues.

Following slow bowler Chris Thompson’s retirement due to knee problems, Jon Lister was supposed to be first team skipper this season. However, he is just starting to play again after a cruciate ligament reconstruction.

The experienced Larner, a prolific runmaker down the years for Fields and then the merged club, was the obvious man to take the reins again.

However, he misses tomorrow’s game, along with hard-hitting Chris Metcalf, so Dru Patel is in charge for the first time.

Smith and youngster Will Parkin return and Larner has been impressed with the improvement shown by bowler Parkin and developing offspinner James Norcliffe so far this season.

Khan has made a fine start to the season, with 25 wickets so far, and hostile opening partner Bennett-Keer should return from an ankle injury next week.

Meanwhile, the Rams will be monitoring how the introduction of the pyramid system in Yorkshire affects their cricket with reports that some of the CYCL’s strongest clubs may be set to leave.
