Tyrer try-assist was ‘Super League class’
Halifax coach Richard Marshall lauded a moment of “Super League class” from centre Steve Tyrer after his side clinched a 14-8 Championship win at Hunslet last Friday night. Fax, who had been reduced to 12 men when winger Gareth Potts was sin-binned inside the last 10 minutes, hit the front for the first time in the game five minutes from time at the South Leeds Stadium when Tyrer set up half back Ben Johnston for the winning touchdown.
Tyrer broke down the left before positioning Johnston perfectly for a try by the posts that finally broke a Hunslet side who had produced what coach Barry Eaton labelled as their best performance of the season.
“Mitch Cahalane came up with a couple of strong carries to get us some field position and then Steve and Johnno showed some class,” said Marshall, whose side now start the weekend in fourth place ahead of this weekend’s crucial showdown at Dewsbury.
“Steve’s a Super League player and he showed the maturity and experience that we needed at that moment.
“It was a difficult game; we anticipated a tough fixture and Hunslet were the better team at times if I’m being honest.
“You have to credit them, because on that form they are one of the better teams we have played this year.
“But I thought the last 20 minutes we showed our extra fitness and used our size a bit more.
“It was an important try though, really important in the context of the season.”
With injuries biting, Fax fielded young side, with Hull KR hooker Connor Robinson and trialist centre Jake Eccleston, a former Warrington junior, both featuring.
The visitors were rarely at their best with the ball, but despite conceding a mountain of possession only conceded one try - an interception to Hawks winger Richie Barnett - to illustrate the quiet progress being made under Marshall’s coaching.
“We had Connor and Jake out there and it was a young team at times,” said Marshall.
“But they do work had for each other; James Saltonstall made over 200 metres for us, Andy Bracek and Mitch coming up with those late carries to take us forward, Scott Murrell hobbling around on his ankle, Ben Kaye really giving us some direction in the final quarter.
“Jake got himself involved in those last few minutes, which is what you look for in players, people who want to put their hand up for the team.
“He’s quick and sharp, which is why he’s here.
“Connor was lively at dummy half, he’s a bit off the pace in terms of our calls and plays, but he did pretty well.” Fax are putting on free coaches for all Executive Club members, season ticket holders and fans who pre-book their tickets for the ‘home’ game against London Broncos at Keighley’s Cougar Park on Saturday, June 27 (6pm).
