council offices in Ripponden could be at the centre of the community with the support of local residents, according to Ripponden Parish Council, which has appealed to people to think again before voting to sell the Ryburn Rooms in Oldham Road. The parish council decided to hold a referendum on the offices after a stormy reaction from residents forced to pay an extra £12 on their poll tax bills to meet council costs. years ago

sales representa­tive Ronald Oldham, aged 36, co-pilot of a light aircraft which crashed at Barkisland, is being treated at the Royal Halifax Infirmary for shock, bruises and friction burns. The plane overturned after striking the top of a wall during takeoff and broke its back. The pilot, David Whitham, a dairyman, of Wainstalls, Halifax, who dragged his friend from the wreckage, was treated for shock. The blue and white two-seater aircraft is jointly owned by the two men.

The Serbian Orthodox Church at Boothtown, Halifax, is celebratin­g the tenth anniversar­y of the church’s consecrati­on. Hundreds of Yugoslavs from all over the North of England attended a church service attended by members of the Yugoslav royal family, including Prince Tomislav, brother of King Peter, and his wife, Margharita, and Prince Andrew, another brother of the exiled king.
