Siddal slip up as July schedule looms large

-

Siddal missed a chance to go top of the National Conference League when beaten 23-16 at home by Lock Lane on Friday evening. Gareth Greenwood’s side, looking to complete a hattrick after wins over Oulton and Thatto Heath, had a poor first quarter and trailed 12-0 after 18 minutes.

Tries from prop Joe Groves and centre Wayne McHugh, plus two Nathan Fozzard goals put the visitors in the driving seat.

However, the Chevinedge men hit back in the last 13 minutes of the half to go in at the break on level terms thanks to touch downs from prop George Ambler and stand off Shaun Garrod, Chris Brooke adding both conversions.

There was no addition to the score in the third quarter but Lane regained the lead through McHugh’s second try, converted by Fozzard, and then an Aaron Dobek drop goal to make it 19-12.

Loose forward Gareth English got Siddal back within striking distance by scoring an unconverted try on 71 minutes but winger Connor Turner scored a clincher for the visitors,

Lane climb above Siddal into second place and the pair are both one point behind leaders Wigan St Patrick’s after 12 rounds of fixtures.

“It was probably going a bit too well for us,” joked Greenwood.

“They turned up really, really up for it and built that bit of a lead and we found it hard to get back into it.

“We were okay, but it looked like Cup Final time for them and we didn’t match that enthusiasm early on.”

Siddal are without a game this weekend, but face a pivotal July, with trips to Wigan St Patricks and Wath Brow, followed by home games against Hull Dockers and Leigh MR.

“You probably couldn’t pick four tougher games,” said Greenwood. “They’re coming at the time when you start to lose players with holidays and family commitments, but hopefully we’ve got the squad to cover that this season.” Premier Division
