Medal back with Stan’s family
A MEDAL belonging to Halifax Rugby League Club legend Stan Kielty has been reunited with his family more than 35 years after it was stolen.
The medal was awarded to Stan for winning the 1953-54 European Cup with England against Wales, France and other nationalities.
But it was stolen from his home in Highroyd Well, Halifax, during a burglary, explained his son Malcolm.
”He had all his memorabilia and medals at his home, but he was burgled in 1983,” Malcolm recalled.
“But this medal turned up at a house clearance locally, where a friend saw the inscription and knew it was Stan’s, and consequently got in touch with us via a relative.
“So, here we are, returned to the family 37 years after the theft.
“It’s good to have it back in the family again.
“We’re going to donate it to the collection in the Hall of Fame at The Shay, of which dad is a part.
“It would be terrific if any of the others pieces of memorabilia could be returned with no further questions asked. Please contact me direct on 07946 510900 or malcolm.kielty@outlook.com.”
Stan, who died in 2008, aged 83, played for Halifax between 1947 and 1958 and holds the record for most games for the club which stands at 482 appearances between 1946 and 1958. During his time, Fax had the most sustained period of success in their history winning the Yorkshire Cup twice, the Yorkshire League four times and were Championship runners up three times.
