Penson leads Stainland Lions’ charge in Austwick Amble race

-

James Penson was the first Stainland Lions’ runner home in the Austwick Amble Fell Race, a counter in this year’s Fell Racing Championship.

Five Lions took on the senior race, run over a loop circuit of approximately eight miles and covering a total ascent of 1,200 feet.

The first four miles of the route passes through the beautiful Crummockdale limestone scenery and briefly joins Sulber Nick, which connects the Yorkshire Peaks of Pen-y-Ghent and Ingleborough. The return leg descends slowly back through spectacular scenery to Austwick and to the finish on the village green.

Penson clocked a time of 1:05:29, followed by Paul Patrick 1:11:36, Ray Mooney 1:15:17, Aileen Baldwin 1:16:30 and Helen Hudson 1:19:15.

The 6.9-mile Pete Shields Ilkley Trail Race has spectacular views over the Wharfe Valley and across Ilkley Moor.

The out-and-back route contains 810 feet of climbing on multi-terrain and Martin O’Brien was the first Lion to finish in 1:04:01. He was followed by Michelle Rogerson in 1:04:24.

The Pen-y-Ghent Fell Race is one of the few ‘mountain course’ events in Yorkshire, which puts this race in the longer end of the AS fell race category.

The new 6.8-mile route has a climb of 1,590 feet and Lions’ Damien Pearson ran 1:14:34, with Will Rushworth, representing Calder Valley Fell Runners, finishing in 1:03:53.

A healthy turn-out of 35 Lions ran the Northowrun 5, a counter in the Club Championship, and they recorded some impressive results.

There were course personal bests for David Farrar, Sue Cash and Phil Richards, and age category places for Richard Crombie (1st MV40), Daniel Sykes (1st MV35), Mags
