Halifax Hockey Club’s U10s girls travelled to Ben Rhydding in their latest Yorkshire League matches and they finished top of their section after excellent performances.

Playing in a four-team group, Halifax faced a difficult start against the talented hosts but the visitors fought hard, defended well and threatened on the counter-attack as they shared the spoils from a 0-0 draw.

It was a different story in the clash with Wakefield and Halifax’s fine display of teamwork, passing and finishing resulted in a hugely impressive 8-0 win.

Layla Hoyland led the scoring with a hat-trick, Chloe Watson added a brace and the other goals came from Kitty Berry, Jessie Nettleship and Brooke Larkin.

The final game against Leeds was a tough one but the team worked well together again, focusing on passing and controlling the ball.

The team demonstrated great confidence when passing and Nellie Newton and Jessie both worked together well up front, scoring five goals between them.

As Halifax tired, Leeds grabbed a goal to finally find a way past Fax goalkeeper Evana Hewitson-Townle.

However, the 5-1 win put the team top of their section on goal difference, with Ben Rhydding.

Delilah Hall and Edie Greenwood made some excellent tackles.

A young U10s boys team were missing several senior players but acquitted themselves well.

They lost to Slazenger and Leeds Adel but defeated Aire Valley thanks to goals from

Max Greenwood (2), Isaac Birch (2) and Hugo Manning.

Halifax U16s put in a good performance to beat Slazenger 5-1. Evelyn Rooke and Jess Sanderson scored early but Fax were caught on a rare breakaway as Slazenger cut the deficit from a short corner.

India Mallinson restored the two-goal lead after the break and joint player of the day Tilly Crowther got a brace to complete the win. Lizzy Whelan was the other player of the day and both Izzy Giles and Lydia Stead played their best games for the team.

The younger U14s girls, Ella Daines, Sasha Truncaite and Scarlett Dodds held their own with Hannah Veal and Olivia Scholefield being more influential. Elicia Ramsden marshalled the defence well and keeper Meadow Chatell was rarely troubled.
