Top marks for Valley juniors in school finals

Six juniors from Calder Valley Fell Runners represente­d Calderdale schools in the West Yorkshire Primary Schools Cross Country finals, at Temple Newsam.

The youngsters came through area heats and the Calderdale finals last November to earn their place in the finals where age group races ranged from 1.1k to 1.5k in distance.

In the Year 3 boys race (7 to 8 year-olds), Teddy Haigh, Jules Ciolino and Winston Lalande all showed their potential.

The race was won by a Bradford runner in 5:17, with the leading Calderdale schools boy finishing sixth in 5:25. Winston finished 25th and fifth from Calderdale in 5:46, Jules was 44th, and eighth from Calderdale in 5:56 while Teddy finished 51st in West Yorkshire, and ninth from Calderdale, in 5:59.

In the Year 4 girls race (8 to 9 year-olds) Cora Slater finished 88th and 16th for Calderdale in a time of 6:57. The winning girl from Leeds clocked 5:16 with the leading Calderdale runner in sixth place with 5:46.

Meanwhile, in the Year 5 boys (9 to 10 year-olds), Alwyn Gardner finished the slightly longer course in 6:28 to claim 66th place and 15th from Calderdale. The winner from Leeds ran 5:32 and the leading Calderdale runner clocked 5:43.

Taking part in the Year 6 boys (10 to 12 year-olds) race was Sam Breaks, who ran 6:41 to finish 119th overall and 18th from Calderdale.

The winner from Bradford recorded 5:13, with the first Calderdale finisher crossing the line in 5:31.

Elsewhere, Alfie Hobday was 14th U11s finisher in the Hoppits Hill fell race with a time of 16:03.

In the senior race, Joseph Stone came 16th overall and was second U15s in 25:06.

George kettlewell was just ahead in 12th with a time of 24:20.

There were spectacula­r views of the Northern Pennines for those taking part in Saturday’s High Cup Nick fell race.

Calder Valley’s Virgil Barton finished 69th and 10th V50, Andrew Davies was 236th and 19th V60 and Francis Woof clinched 272nd and 21st V60.

Valley’s Adam Breaks ran in the Fix Events Winter Warmer cross country half marathon and claimed fourth overall and first V40 in a time of 1 hour 33 minutes.
