Be proud of role public is playing

-

Craig Whittaker, MP, suggests in ‘Talking Politics’, March 7, that it is a total waste of time to call for a ‘ceasefire now’ in Gaza and to call for the UK to stop sending arms to Israel.

He claims that Israel

“will not be swayed by international pressure”.

There are examples of Israel being swayed, like when the US president Ronald Reagan phoned Israel to say that American weapons will not be sold to Israel if Israel did not stop the war against Lebanon. The next day Israel stopped the war. Joe Biden should do the same today.

One hundred and ninetytwo countries in the UN condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza and the UK could join them.

Likewise, a lot of countries will no longer sell arms to Israel and the UK should join them too. This is how apartheid was defeated in South Africa.

The UK should also restore financial support to the UN’s relief effort to the Palestinian refugees across the Middle East.

Can I just make one more suggestion to Mr Whittaker and the UK government:

Just like the UK welcomed refugees from Ukraine why not set up a similar scheme for people in Gaza?

The public around the UK and world can be proud of the weekly protests against Israel’s war in Gaza. They happen in Todmorden on Sundays and Hebden Bridge on Saturdays at 3pm. The protests also take place in Halifax and elsewhere. the shots and we can’t do anything about it.

If this is true of Gaza, it’s also true of the Trident submarine.

Again, our financial input is tiny compared to that of the US; so, again, the US is bound to call the shots and we can’t do anything about it.

How come Mr Whittaker is such a strong supporter of Trident?

The billions and billions of pounds we spend on

Trident could certainly fix the potholes (which you featured on March 7, page 5) not to mention hospitals,
