There were some outstanding performances from the Diamonds Gymnastics Club contingent who travelled to Telford to compete in the men's and women's Artistic English Championships, with several securing places in the forthcoming British Championships.

The Halifax club were represented by 10 committed and talented gymnasts who train for between 17 and 22 hours each week, fitting in training around their education.

There are not only titles up for grabs at the English Championships, but also the chance to compete in the British Championships in Liverpool, as well as serving as a selection event for upcoming international competitions.

And in the men's Artistic U14s competition, strong performances from Isaac Ralph, Elliott Welding and Sonny Atkinsonsecuredtheirplacesin the British Championships.

In the U16s, Alfie Roberts was competing in his first national competition and picked up vital experience while Jacob Howard, who appeared in the U14s last year, improved his score greatly.

In the U18s, Ben Julian posted his best score at a national championship and team mate Jack Kershaw’s strong performance clinched his spot in the British Championships.

Lily Newton competed in the women’s artistic junior section, making her English Championships debut and she performed strongly to deliver four clean routines.

In the senior section, both Louise Akers and Matilda Peacock were looking to build on British Classic Challenge medals they won at the end of 2023.

Louise produced strong performances on three pieces to ensure she achieved a personal best score.

Matilda was making her first appearance at an English Championships and although a nervy start affected her overall score, a solid performance on the beam was the highlight of the day.

The gymnasts have all returned to training to work hard towards the British Championships and next year’s English Championships.
