School puts focus on rights of child

- Leona Greenan

St John Ogilvie High welcomed Tam Baillie, the Children and Young People’s Commissioner for Scotland, to their inaugural rights day.

The S3 junior leadership team who organised the event were delighted when he agreed to address the year group.

He spoke passionately about his goal for children and young people in Scotland to be as safe and happy as possible through understanding their rights and making sure they are respected in every aspect of their lives.

Headteacher Eddie Morrison said: “This was a memorable day, with the students engaged in a number of activities designed to raise awareness of the The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and how these can be upheld in their daily lives.”

In one of the workshops Mr Baillie helped a group of pupils understand key messages from a wholeschool audit.

The messages will be used to create an action plan.

Other contributors to the day were Hannah Daly and Rhiannon Burney from the Scottish Youth Parliament and Alison Harvie from J Watson Scott solicitors in Hamilton.

St John Ogilvie’s S6 leavers said goodbye to the school with a day of fun, laughter and tears.

Their packed day included an awards ceremony before enjoying a buffet and then creating a banner to hang in the street area of the school for session 2016/17 as a parting message to the rest of the school community.

This year the banner reads ‘Once an Ogilvie wean, always an Ogilvie wean’.

Head girl Shannon Balfour said: “It was a great day and the whole year group were fantastic.

“It was very emotional but fun too and a great way to finish off six great years.”
