One year down for town MP

Crawley marks anniversary

- Staff reporter

Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley says her office has dealt with over 2500 constituency enquiries and almost 500 cases in the last year.

The numbers were revealed as the SNP representative looked back on her first 12 months in the House of Commons.

And Ms Crawley has pledged she will “continue to be a force for equality, social justice, and progressive change” in her Westminster role.

She said: “When I was first elected, I promised to be the hardest-working MP Lanark and Hamilton East had ever had, and I believe I have kept my word and delivered – making a lasting impact, providing much needed information and assistance to thousands of my constituents.”

And she added: “From championing the abolition of tribunal fees, to calling the Chancellor out on the damage cuts to Universal Credit will have on the people I represent, I have made my constituents’ voices heard in Parliament.”

In Parliament she says she backed a real Living Wage for everyone; campaigned to abolish cuts to tax credits; highlighted the impact of Universal Credit on families; campaigned against anti-trade union legislation; led the 50:50 Parliament campaign calling for greater gender equality in Westminster; nominated Mushtaqs restaurant based in Hamilton as the winner of the Parliamentary Tiffin Cup for Scotland; campaigned for the removal of the socalled Tampon Tax; called for the removal of tribunal fees; called for greater protections and recognition for gender identity; and is campaigning to ensure refuges are exempt from housing benefit changes.

And in her constituency, Ms Crawley says she has held an energy surgery with Scottish Gas; a free dog micro-chipping event; held a street surgery in every village; campaigned alongside parents against the school bus cuts and the proposed closure of the Coalyard Tearoom and Laundry; opened the Scottish Gas Training Academy in Uddingston; campaigned against the proposal to move the University of the West of Scotland to North Lanarkshire; and is organising her first jobs fair.

She added: “I know the problems people in Lanark and Hamilton East face and I’ve taken on the duty to try and improve their lives.”
