A ‘remarkable life’ to be remembered

Thanks from family

- Shirley Bartynek

The funeral of a popular young Blantyre man, killed by a train at Cambuslang Station, will be held this Friday.

Marcus Whitelaw was hit by the train just before noon on Thursday, May 12.

As the news of his death spread, tributes flooded in for the former Calderside Academy pupil and keen football fan.

Blantyre Vics held a minute’s silence for him before a match last Wednesday.

And this week, his family released a statement thanking everyone for their support and inviting them to remember his “remarkable life”.

A statement from the family read: “We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts prayers, and words of kindness. They have been a source of such comfort.

“We want to extend a warm welcome to everyone to join us at The Parkville, Blantyre, following the committal at Priestfield Cemetery.

“We wish to express all who knew Marcus, to join with us for a cup of tea, a blether, and to remember a remarkable life and we are very keen to meet friends of Marcus who were unknown to us.”

Marcus’ family have requested no flowers be sent, in lieu of which donations can be made to William Hunter House – a centre run by the Salvation Army in Glasgow.

They say any contribution would be warmly welcomed and of great comfort.

The reception into the church, will take place at St Joseph’s RC Church, Blantyre, on Thursday, May 26, at 7.30pm.

For those wishing to escort Marcus into the church, the procession will depart from the junction of Cowan Wilson Avenue and Glasgow Road at 7.20pm.

The Requiem Mass will be held at St Joseph’s RC Church, Blantyre, on Friday, May 27, at 10am, thereafter committal at Priestfield Cemetery.
