Now let the Hamilton Games event begin ...
Area’s primary schools to take part in various sports
The Palace Sports Grounds will play host to the‘hamilton Games’ later this month.
Organised by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture’s (SLLC) Active Schools team, the event – on May 31 and June 1 – will bring together around 800 primary school children from across the town to compete in a variety of sports.
The youngsters – all from primary five – will get the chance to choose four sports from a list that includes judo, tae kwon do, athletics, rugby, football, cricket, tennis, hockey, American football, netball, extreme dodgeball and dance.
Coaches from amateur clubs will then deliver focused coaching in their chosen fields, with pupils being encouraged to try something new.
Chair of SLLC, Councillor Hamish Stewart, said: “The success of Glasgow 2014 is as much in its legacy as the fantastic events that took place here two summers ago. And now in an Olympic year, what better way to continue that legacy than to offer our pupils the opportunity to experience new sports right here on their own doorstep.”
Schools taking part this year are David Livingstone; St Ninian’s; Newfield; Robert Smellie; Chatelherault; Townhill; Udston; St Joseph’s; St Paul’s; Hareleeshill; Glenlee; Muiredge; St Mary’s (Hamilton); St Blane’s; Our Lady and St Anne’s; Beckford; Woodhead; Netherburn; Machanhill; St Elizabeth’s; Quarter; St Bride’s (Bothwell); and St Peter’s.
