It’s time to take care of yourself in later life

As you get older, taking care of your wellbeing is more important than ever.

If you have a long-term condition, such as diabetes or arthritis your feet are particular­ly vulnerable.

Check your feet regularly and ensure you attend check-ups as requested.

If you notice any problems, report them to your GP as soon as possible.

Fortunatel­y, there’s a lot we can do to protect our feet and most common problems can be treated successful­ly by a chiropodis­t or podiatrist - there’s no difference between the two, but most now prefer to call themselves podiatrist­s.

“As we get older, an annual foot health check is as important as a sight or hearing test,” says Mike O’neill, Consultant Podiatrist and spokespers­on for the College of Podiatry.

“Conditions like diabetes or circulator­y problems can all be picked up by looking at the feet and common problems like corns, cracked skin and ingrown toenails can be successful­ly treated.”

If you have foot related problems and want to see a health profession­al privately, make sure you check that they are registered with the Health and Care Profession­s Council.

The Council only registers profession­als who meet their standards for training, profession­al skills and behaviour.

Keep active

More and more senior citizens are enjoying a healthier life and most take part in regular exercise.

One of the most popular workouts is Zumba Gold.

This is a low impact version of the dance based fitness class.

Catriona Macgregor of the charity LEAP which is aimed at fitness for the over-50s, tor, said: “Some people might think that zumba is not for them, but our classes are set at a suitable pace and are also great fun.

“I’d encourage anyone with an interest in keeping fit and having fun to give it a go.” Be a good neighbour If someone you know lives on your street you could pop in and check on them on a regular basis.

There are organisati­ons that specialise in befriendin­g and who offer a lifeline to senior citizens.

Simply dropping by to enjoy a cuppa, and maybe some cake, can make a real difference to someone on their own.

And it may encourage them to join community groups in the area too.
