It’s time to take care of yourself in later life
As you get older, taking care of your wellbeing is more important than ever.
If you have a long-term condition, such as diabetes or arthritis your feet are particularly vulnerable.
Check your feet regularly and ensure you attend check-ups as requested.
If you notice any problems, report them to your GP as soon as possible.
Fortunately, there’s a lot we can do to protect our feet and most common problems can be treated successfully by a chiropodist or podiatrist - there’s no difference between the two, but most now prefer to call themselves podiatrists.
“As we get older, an annual foot health check is as important as a sight or hearing test,” says Mike O’neill, Consultant Podiatrist and spokesperson for the College of Podiatry.
“Conditions like diabetes or circulatory problems can all be picked up by looking at the feet and common problems like corns, cracked skin and ingrown toenails can be successfully treated.”
If you have foot related problems and want to see a health professional privately, make sure you check that they are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.
The Council only registers professionals who meet their standards for training, professional skills and behaviour.
Keep active
More and more senior citizens are enjoying a healthier life and most take part in regular exercise.
One of the most popular workouts is Zumba Gold.
This is a low impact version of the dance based fitness class.
Catriona Macgregor of the charity LEAP which is aimed at fitness for the over-50s, tor, said: “Some people might think that zumba is not for them, but our classes are set at a suitable pace and are also great fun.
“I’d encourage anyone with an interest in keeping fit and having fun to give it a go.” Be a good neighbour If someone you know lives on your street you could pop in and check on them on a regular basis.
There are organisations that specialise in befriending and who offer a lifeline to senior citizens.
Simply dropping by to enjoy a cuppa, and maybe some cake, can make a real difference to someone on their own.
And it may encourage them to join community groups in the area too.
