Have a great holiday day out at the Traquair Fayre

-

And so another Bank Holiday is upon us and whatever the weather, everyone will be looking for something to do.

With the glorious scenery that our area has to offer, there is no shortage of places to go and things to do, from secluded country spots in our historic towns and villages to places of adventure, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

And one venue where you can step back in time is Traquair House.

Dating back to 1107, Traquair was originally a hunting lodge for the kings and queens of Scotland.

It laterbecame a refuge for Catholic priests in times of terror the Stuarts of Traquair supported Mary Queen of Scots and the Jacobite cause without counting the cost.

Now it is open to the pubic and not only hosts weddings and events but also its very own brewery too.

And this weekend is the mediavel fayre.

A truly authentic Mediaval Fayre that this year will celebrate the marriage and gift of the house by the Earl of Buchan to his son, James Stuart who became 1st Laird of Traquair in 1491.

A Grand Tournée will take place on the wineglass lawn in front of the house with combat displays with knights in armour, a battle of the shields and grand melée finale.

On the grassed avenue spectacular displays of jousting and tilting will take place with a record number of re-enactors setting up living camps and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

And the old Walled Garden is transformed into a Medieval market with living history displays of everything from making chain mail armour to medicinal remedies.

You can have a go at longbow archery, try out the stocks or see how medieval torture instruments were used.

Young visitors can try their hand at felt making, willow working, medieval forge, bodging and spoon making as well as merchants’ selling leatherwork, jewellery, children’s costumes, pottery and other crafts.

And young knights can make their own swords and helmets as well as listening to storytelling with Mistress Quill.

Falconry displays will also taking place during the weekend and superb Medieval music for the Galloway Consort in the Chapel as well as wandering minstrels.

Food fans will be happy with Ye Olde Pizza Oven in the garden will complement the delicious Medieval Fayre Ale brewed exclusively for the weekend.

So this Bank Holiday do something a little different.
