Digging the work

Priory Bridge project

-

Leona Greenan Green-fingered members of Priory Bridge Residents Association in Blantyre were out in force sprucing up their estate over the weekend.

The residents association applied to the Grow Wild initiative earlier this year for the supply of wildflower seeds and were successful in obtaining 30 Grow Wild seed kits.

Grow Wild is the UK’S biggest-ever wild flower campaign, bringing people together to transform local spaces with native, pollinatorfriendly wild flowers and plants.

Chairman of the Priory Bridge Residents Association, Brian Charlton explained: “The gardening event attracted 20 adult and children volunteers from the local community on Sunday, May 22, and we were delighted with the help and turnout.

“Prior to the event, staff from South Lanarkshire Council’s Land Services rotovated a chosen area in a field in the Priory Bridge estate before the adults did most of the digging and the kids spread the seeds on Sunday.

“Now we just have to sit back and wait and the reap the rewards of some lovely flowers in the area.”

The 2016 Grow Wild Scotland kit included corn marigold, common or corn poppy, meadow buttercup, meadowsweet, yellow rattle and much more.

Community and youth projects are invited to apply to the initiative in time for spring each year. For further information on the Grow Wild – Flowers to the People initiative visit www.growwild. com
