American dream for stamp club

-

Ahead of the presidential election, Lanarkshire Philatelic Society gathered last Friday evening for a trip through the history of the USA.

Guest speaker Lynn Robinson, of the Caledonian Philatelic Society, was brought up watching Westerns on film and TV, sparking a lifelong interest in America.

She has built up an amazing collection of stamps, miniature sheets, meter marks and postcards – all illustrating the history, geography and social history of the USA.

The display included postal material illustrating each battle in the American Revolution and miniature sheets showed the important soldiers and personages involved – as well as that of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence on the July 4, 1776.

Members viewed miniature sheets showing each president through the years, and more showing the Gold Rush of California in 1848.

This led to the need to develop transport to carry news – the stagecoaches of Wells Fargo in 1852; the Pony Express of Buffalo Bill in 1860; and the coming of the rail road.

Maureen Mathieson led members in giving warm thanks to Lynn for giving such a“wonderfully educational and exciting”display.

The society’s next meeting will be in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, on Friday, November 18, at 7.30pm.

Members look forward to welcoming guest speaker Jean Osborne, with her display of Papua New Guinea.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history or postcards is very welcome to attend.
