Brothers’ 24-hour football fundraiser

Epic match raises nearly £2800 forthe Haven

- Leona Greenan

A pair of Uddingston brothers competed in an epic 24-hour game of football to raise money for a Lanarkshire charity that supports those with life-limiting illness.

Ian and Matthew Gilmour raised an incredible £2786 for The Haven, after playing in a marathon five-aside game.

Ian, who is student president at City of Glasgow College, explained: “It was a bit of a relief when we finished.

“I was sore and I was really tired. It’s a small price though, some of the people who use The Haven feel like this every day.”

The charity offer help to people and their families affected by illnesses like cancer, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. The Haven is close to the Gilmour brothers’ heart as their mother has degenerative condition multiple sclerosis and is a frequent user of The Haven.

Ian (22), added: “My mum’s been struggling a lot recently so we wanted to do something for the charity that has supported her so amazingly over the years.”

The chronic condition is caused by damage to nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord and is extremely debilitating.

It can lead to difficulties with mobility, impairing vision and memory and making everyday life very difficult.

David Henson, Haven fundraising officer, collected the cheque from Ian and said: “What a challenge to take on, and for 60 to 70 young men from all over Lanarkshire to commit to pushing themselves in this physical challenge is something to be proud of.

“The amount raised is fantastic and we thank the Gilmour family and all who took part for their time and effort.”
