St Blane’s Primary in Blantyre has been recognised with a prestigious national award for innovation and achievement in delivering physical education and extracurricular sport.

The sportscotland Gold School Sport Award was presented to staff and pupils at the school on Thursday, January 12, by Robbie Stewart from sportscotland.

The School Sport Award is a national initiative that is designed to encourage schools to continuously improve physical education and sport.

The award also encourages sporting links between schools and the communities around them.

There are currently 158 gold schools, 281 silver and 92 bronze across Scotland.

To achieve a bronze or silver sportscotland School Sport Award, schools self-assess their current practice. However, to gain gold status an extensive external assessment is also carried out by an independent panel of experts.

The sportscotland School Sport Award focuses on eight core areas: Physical Education, School Sport, Pathways, Compete and Perform, Celebrating Sport, Leadership, Career Long Professional Learning and Recognition and Awards.

St Blane’s Sports Committee, which includes representatives from each class, worked throughout last year to develop each of these areas within the school and collect evidence of this to gain the award.

Mairi Lynch, health and wellbeing co-ordinator at St Blane’s, said: “It is an honour to be awarded the gold award.

“Our staff, pupils, parents and local community work incredibly hard to ensure that PE and sport are at the heart of our school and curriculum.

“We are extremely proud of our achievement and are looking forward to continuing to enhance PE and sport within St Blane’s.”
