‘Dump is a danger and an eyesore’

- Shirley Bartynek

Angry Larkhall residents have hit out at fly-tippers who continually dump their waste just yards from their homes.

Fed-up Campbell Irvine, of Firbank Avenue, says people have targeted the area for years and he has reported the problem to the authorities – but still the garbage continues to pile up.

He explained: “The fly-tipping has been going on for years and years.

“The problem I think is the area of land, in that it might be privately owned.

“But the mess piles up and it’s an eyesore and that doesn’t help the residents. We have complained to the authorities on a number of occasions but yet it still continues.

“Everything is getting dumped and I do believe someone will get hurt on the waste one day.

“The council were out just last week clearing up some of the mess but there was lots left over. It’s awful and embarrassing to have to look at this each day.”

Shirley Clelland, head of fleet and environmental services at South Lanarkshire Council, said: “We are aware of the waste dumping in this area but have not found any evidence that would indicate where the waste material originated.

“Environmental services will be writing to the land owner making them aware that the area is being used for fly tipping.”
