Car park repairs mean residents are raging
Town centre work
Strathaven residents have raised concerns about parking at the heart of the town.
Drivers in the Common Green have been unable to park in the centre of the town following massive work in the upper car park as part of the Strathaven conservation area regeneration scheme (CARS).
This has meant that there are only a handful of parking spaces available in the town centre.
Works include the realignment of the entrance to the car park, improvements to the taxi rank and creation of a small public space.
The majority of space has reopened with work to install electric car charging points and general landscape improvements.
But local MP Dr Lisa Cameron has been fielding complaints from residents.
She said: “Parking continues to be difficult for visitors, along with public transport routes and the closing of our public toilets which deters constituents and tourists from the town centre.
“I will be writing to them regarding the main issues raised and will also be meeting with public transport providers to further discuss.”
South Lanarkshire Council head of planning and economic development services Pauline Elliott said: “The Common Green and Allison Green work packages are part of the Strathaven Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS), a £1.5 million project designed to focus on fabric improvements to the historic core of Strathaven.
“This level of investment underlines the council’s commitment to our smaller towns and villages and seeks to assist the residents of Strathaven in maximising the potential that exists within this historic environment and maximise economic benefits through partnership working.”
