Mailman: Collins is a head-case
Motherwell boxer Charlie Flynn has blasted opponent Ryan Collins for an alleged illegal headbutt that forced his Celtic title bid to be declared a technical draw in the third round.
Flynn and Irvine scrapper Collins were fighting as part of the Ricky Burns undercard on Saturday, but neither man went home happy after the clash of heads.
The 23-year-old said:“we know Ryan Collins, we’ve watched him.
“His last fight was stopped by a headbutt, the fight before that was stopped by a headbutt – he’s renowned for headbutting.
“We spoke to the referee before the fight and we told him to watch the headbutts, and make sure he doesn’t fall in with his head.
“I made him miss and he just fell in – bang – headbutt.
“I haven’t spoken to him, he just said‘sorry mate’and that was it.
“The doctor has given me 90 days because the cut is so deep.
“If there’s a rematch there’s a chance of it happening again, because it happens to 80 per cent of his opponents, but I will be back.”
Collins took exception to a Facebook post by Flynn and said:“i saw Charlie Flynn saying it was an illegal headbutt; the guy is a nice lad but a pure boomerang.
“It would have been good to see how the fight panned out, but I can’t be too disheartened with a draw.”
Flynn received treatment for just under an hour and had 25 stitches inserted.
He said:“i was feeling great and really settling into the fight, but what can you do?”
