Hillhouse celebrate Volunteers Week

- Kirsten Mcstay

Hillhouse residents recently celebrated Volunteers Week by visiting their local community hub.

Working alongside Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire, Community Links (South Lanarkshire) hosted an interactive ‘Treasure Trail’ which encouraged people to download a map, follow the instructions and clues and discover secret locations.

One of the locations was the Hillhouse Community Hub where volunteers were greeted and given freebies for completing the challenge.

Paul Hayward, social marketing officer for Community Links, said: “Volunteering remains at the heart of what we do. The Volunteers Week event in Hillhouse allowed us and some of our current volunteers to let people know what opportunities are available to them and how they can get involved in their community.

“We also held similar events in Fairhill and Westburn, as well as opening our office doors to our local communities for them to find out more about who we are and what we do.”

He continued: “Volunteers Week is not just about recruiting new volunteers, it’s also about recognising the hard-work, commitment and dedication of the great volunteers we already have. We want to say a huge Community Links ‘thank you’ to all our volunteers for their support in the last 15 years.”

Located in the Hillhouse and Earnock Community Centre, the Hillhouse Community Hub is open every Thursday between 10am and 4pm and includes the Hillstop Cafe and Fruits and Shoots Food Co-op – where everyone is welcome.

Also available at the hub is the successful SELECT IT project. Friendly and helpful volunteers can help you create CVS, apply for job opportunities and access online services.

The SELECT drop-in hub runs every Tuesday and Thursday between 10am and 4pm.

To find out more about how you can get involved in your local community, or for information about volunteering opportunities, please call Community Links on (01698) 827583.
