Miracle twins’ 1st birthday

Joy as premature twins are ready to celebrate their first birthdays

- Kirsten Mcstay

A Hamilton mum is preparing to celebrate her twin girls ’first birthday — after doctors told her one was unlikely to survive the pregnancy.

Brave Lauren Hall defied medics ’advice to have a “selective reduction ”to remove one foetus from her womb to give the other twin a better chance of survival.

And the gamble has certainly paid off as her beautiful daughters — Juliette and Eleanor— celebrate their first birthday on Sunday.

Miracle Hamilton twins are celebrating their first birthdays this week – after doctors suspected one wouldn’t survive their mum’s pregnancy.

Lauren Hall found out she was pregnant at the age of 17 and when she was told she was having twins, it came as a massive shock.

However, doctors told Lauren that one of the twins was unlikely to survive to her next scan.

They also said that even if her baby did survive, she would have several complications – so they recommended that Lauren have a ‘selective reduction’ to remove the baby and give the other twin a better chance.

Lauren was horrified by this and decided not to follow the doctors’ advice.

She said: “I was terrified and really upset. To be told that you are pregnant with twins but you might lose one was horrendous.

“When they suggested I have the selective reduction I refused, because I believed in my babies.”

The twins continued to grow and Juliette and Eleanor Jones were born nine weeks premature on July 23, 2016.

Lauren, from Burnbank, was absolutely amazed and relieved that her twin girls seemed to be a picture of health.

She said: “When they were born and I heard two babies crying I was so relieved.

“I couldn’t believe they were both here together and safe.”

Eleanor was born weighing 4lb 1oz and Juliette – who doctors said might not survive the whole pregnancy – weighed just 2lb 4oz.

Lauren said: “Looking at the scans, I was told that Juliette would have dwarfism, trisomies 13, 18 and 21 and a form of skeletal dysphasia and numerous other complications.

“But she was born perfect, and it was actually Eleanor that needed some support with her breathing.”

Proud mum Lauren said she is looking forward to celebrating the twins’ first birthday on Sunday.

She said: “The girls are coming on great, it’s their first birthday this week so we will be visiting the zoo to celebrate.

“The girls are amazing. Juliette can now clap, wave, sit up and she’s trying her hardest to crawl.

“Eleanor is crawling, standing and getting ready to take her first steps.

“They are my little miracles and I can’t imagine life without them.”

To be told that you might lose one was horrendous
