Best park gets yet another flag
Friends thrilled as fifth is handed out
Strathaven Park has received its fifth Green Flag award in as many years.
The group will now be able to fly the flag handed out by Keep Scotland Beautiful, which recognises it as one of the top parks in the country.
Chair of the Friends of Strathaven Park Trish Summers stated that they were “thrilled” to be honoured.
“We are all delighted that Strathaven Park has been recognised as one of Scotland’s best parks again,” she said.
“It’s a real testament to the volunteers and park staff who put in so much hard work.”
Strathaven Park is one of just three parks in South Lanarkshire to receive the award – alongside Cambuslang Park and Castlebank Park.
All parks are assessed by volunteer judges with a background in park management, conservation or ecology.
Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Good quality green open spaces are vital to the health and well-being of local communities, families and individuals.
“Parks and open spaces are a fantastic asset – they are free to use and provide opportunities to exercise and socialise.
“With more Scottish parks flying the Green Flag award than ever before, this record breaking number is a testament to the determination of park managers, local authorities and volunteers whose hard work in turn brings about a raft of wider impacts on the community as a whole.”
Following continued success, the group are encouraging local people to come forward to join the Friends of Strathaven Park to share your ideas and experience and be part of its success.
The Friends of Strathaven Park’s AGM will be on Friday, August 25 from 10am at Jardine Patterson’s Board Room, next to the Town Mill.
