Grant is on top of the world

- Shirley Bartynek

A big-hearted Hamilton climber is set to travel to Everest Base Camp this month in memory of his grandmother.

Grant Kelly will take part in the gruelling trek on September 21 to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND), the illness which killed his grandmother.

The 24-year-old was extremely close to Elizabeth Vickers, also from Hamilton, who died aged 74.

Grant and his sister Ashleigh have been fundraising for almost a year for the trek.

They originally set a target of £4000 but have doubled that amount by raising MND Scotland.

Grant said:“i have been looking forward to this for almost a year now and can’t wait to complete the trek.

“People have been so generous, it’s blown me away. I £9208 for really can’t thank them enough for the support and donations made over the last year.”

Louise Earley from MND thanked Grant and said: “The money he has raised is already making a huge difference to the lives of those affected by this devastating illness.

“Grant is in for an experience of a lifetime and we wish him the best of luck with his trek.”

The former St John Ogilvie High pupil held a fundraiser in the Cadzow Welfare in Hamilton.

Motor neurone disease is a terminal illness that attacks nerves in the brain and spinal cord.

MND Scotland was set up to support people affected by the disease, as well as funding research to find a cure.
