Residents urged to object to incinerator
MP’S fears for plan
A Hamilton politician this week urged constituents to lodge objections against the plan that would see a controversial incinerator being built in the town.
Angela Crawley, MP for Hamilton East, lodged her own concerns with South Lanarkshire Council’s planning department earlier this year and has campaigned against the proposals since they were first introduced.
The earliest the application can be heard by the planning committee is October 10 and the deadline for objections to be considered is September 25.
Ms Crawley said: “Thousands of my constituents have already united in opposition to the proposal to build a huge waste plant so close to the Whitehill community.
“When the planning application was first brought to my attention, I raised concerns at a consultation event in the Whitehill Neighbourhood Centre.
“Both at that meeting and since, the developer has not alleviated any of my concerns.
“The community in Whitehill have worked hard for more than 10 years to bring regeneration to their local area, and I fear that a plant of this size will fly in the face of their aspirations.
“The size of the stack is enough for me to oppose the plant alone, but there is a number of other issues that this proposal brings.
“The infrastructure surrounding Whitehill may not be able to cope with the scale of this development, and the overshadowing stack would adversely affect treasured historic sites.
“I would therefore urge everyone that is concerned by the proposal to make their voices heard and contact South Lanarkshire Council before the deadline.”
Objections can be lodged by emailing planning@ southlanarkshire.gov.uk
Clean Power Properties say the development will represent an estimated £100million investment in the local economy.
They also say the plant will generate around 150 jobs during construction and 30 full-time jobs once operational.
Clean Power have also hosted a series of public consultation events in Blantyre, Bothwell and Hamilton.
