Money raised in memory of mum

- Robert Mitchell

A Motherwell family who lost their mum ahead of a milestone anniversary decided to keep a booking they had made for a party – and use it to fundraise in her memory.

They had originally booked the South Dalziel Studios to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary of Jean and Gavin Milligan.

Sadly Jean became unwell and, after a short illness, she passed away in the critical care unit at Wishaw General before the couple reached their special milestone.

However, the family were determined to keep the booking and use the venue to raise funds for Macmillan cancer nurses and the staff at the hospital by organising a Black and Gold Ball.

Jean’s daughter, Tracey Reid, said: “Our whole family would like to thank all the wonderful staff in ward seven and the high dependency unit at Wishaw General.

“They made sure mum was well looked after and that she was as comfortable as possible.

“They couldn’t have done anything more and we will always be grateful for the care and attention they gave to mum.”

The family purchased a Dyson fan and two recliner chairs for the hospital, as well as handing over a cheque for over £1000. Gavin Milligan said: “The event gave us all something positive to focus on during what was a very difficult time.

“The staff at Dalziel Studios were terrific and the event was so well organised.

“The night itself was well attended and it was great to have the nurses who looked after Jean there. We were amazed when we realised that we had raised over £5000.

“It was such a great success that we are going to have another event on April 7 next year at South Dalziel Studios.”

“The £5000 was split between Wishaw General Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support.

“The fantastic total was raised through ticket sales and a raffle which included prizes ranging from hairdressing and pampering sessions to British Airways flights and holiday vouchers.”

Tracey added: “Everyone was so generous and I would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and who spent money to allow us to raise such a huge amount of money.

“Everyone who attended told us how much they enjoyed the ball. It was bitter sweet though.

“I am sure that mum would have been very proud of all our efforts. She is sorely missed by us all.”

Carol Miller, senior charge nurse, said: “Gavin, Tracey and their family and friends are really inspirational.

“It is always very humbling when a family, who have just experienced a huge loss, come back to the ward to make a donation which will help other families who are going through a similar experience.

“I am sure I speak on behalf of all the staff within our ward when I say that we were all very touched to be invited to the Black and Gold Ball and by the generosity they have shown.”
