Jubilee Club socials aimed at dementia

Varied programme has an emphasis on music

- Stefanie Mccourt

Those with dementia and their carers are invited to join in social afternoons held by the Stonehouse Jubilee Club.

The group meets every Thursday from 1.30 to 3.30pm in the Lifestyles Centre.

It offers a varied programme with an emphasis on music and reminiscence activities, with favourites including quizzes, musical bingo, karaoke, pampering, armchair aerobics, entertainers, special themed celebrations and the Jubilee Jammers.

The club is hoping to set up a befriending scheme to support those who would like to join the club but have no one to accompany them.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The Jammers produced The Big Sing in June this year in support of Dementia Awareness Week and it was a great success.

“Alzheimer Scotland had asked that the spotlight be placed on friendships, as a survey had shown that people with dementia and their carers were experiencing significant loss of friendships and social connections, and increasing isolation. The Jubilee Club addresses these problems to the best of its ability and it works.

“This is why the club is looking at befriending to try to support those who would benefit from attending the club but have no one to bring them to the afternoon in Stonehouse.

“Funding is important to everyone and the club is pleased to have been supported by The Big Lottery, South Lanarkshire Council, ASDA, the Co-op and individuals, including a young lady who ran the Edinburgh Marathon with monies going to the Jubilee as her uncle had attended the club.

“The motto of the club is ‘music, laughter and friendship’ that is our strength. We believe it’s possible for people to live well with dementia.

“To enable the Jubilee Club to provide a good experience at the weekly sessions we need more volunteers to help. We would be delighted to chat to anyone who felt this was an opportunity that they would like to try.

“Anyone interested should ideally have an awareness of issues facing those with dementia, but it is not essential.”
