Charity wins at Peter Conway

Eddlewood event raises hospice cash

- Andy Mcgilvray

Charity was the real winner as this year’s Peter Conway International tournament at Eddlewood Bowling Club raised £4500 for the Kilbryde Hospice on August 19.

To date, the Hamilton club have raised over £100,000 for the hospice.

Around 128 bowlers took part in this year’s competition, including record-breaking six-time world champion Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall MBE and 2013 World Indoor champion Stewart Anderson.

Internationalists Robert Grant, Ian Campbell, Jim Meikle, Billy Mellors, John Aitken and Scott Kennedy were also in attendance, alongside Lanarkshire county players.

Poor light halted the final, so the teams of Robert Fitzgerald, Brian Fitzgerald and Scott Fitzgerald, and Robert Grant, George Prosser and Gregg Mclaughlin shared the glory.

Beaten semi-finalists were Alex Kelly, Ewan Forrest and Alistair Elliot, and Andrew Bain, Alan Nelson and Alex Nelson.

Eddlewood president Ambrose Dunn said: “It’s of great pride that Eddlewood Bowling Club have raised over £100,000 for Kilbryde Hospice over the last 12 years.

“Peter Conway was a school-mate and friend, so it’s fitting, from a personal note, that the event is named after him.”

Tournament organiser Willie Sharpe said: “A big thanks to all the 128 players who participated in the event. The annual bowling calendar is extremely busy for the top players, but yet again world champions Paul Foster MBE, Alex ‘Tattie’ Marshall MBE and Stewart Anderson made time to play in the charity game.”
