Stunning tribute to war dead

Poppy displays across Strathaven

- Colin Paterson

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

The words of Robert Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen carry a certain poignancy this weekend as the United Kingdom prepares to fall silent to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Across East Kilbride and Avondale, heads will be bowed in silence as a tribute to those who have died during war.

In Strathaven, the tribute has been illustrated perfectly, dramatically, with a stunning poppy display in the town.

With the castle as its backdrop, members of the Strathaven Combat Crocheters and Knitting Ninjas group have created a breathtaking spectacle beautifully captured by photographer Stewart Daniels’ incredible pictures.

A core team of 13 have created over 5500 knitted/ crochet poppies with a group of around 40 volunteers from Strathaven and beyond pulling it all together and putting up the poppies.

The project has taken 10 weeks following the first planning meeting back in July and all donations

will go to the Poppyscotland charity.

Knitted and crochet poppy crosses are also being made.

And a memorial garden has been created in the town between Bridge Street and Kirk Street, with a memorial service taking place this week.

“Poppyscotland provides life-changing support to our armed forces community,” the Strathaven Combat Crocheters and Knitting Ninjas said.

“They reach out to those who have served, those still serving, and their families at times of crisis and need by offering vital, practical advice, assistance and funding.

“They believe that those who serve or have served, whether regular or reserve, are deserving of our support to live life fully without disadvantage after service.

“No veteran should live without the prospect of employment, good health and a home, and we all have a part to play in achieving this. Thank you for supporting Strathaven Combat Crocheters and Knitting Ninjas to support Poppyscotland.”
