Councillor condemns chicane
A ‘dangerous’ chicane on a district road has been criticised.
Strathaven Community Council insist that there is an “additional risk to pedestrians” because of the new installation at the bend on the road to Glassford due to the housing development at the East Overton Estate.
Members revealed at a meeting that they have received countless complaints about the sharp bend – while expressing concerns about the additional risks on Berebriggs Road.
They fear both of these routes pose risks to pedestrians approaching schools on Lethame Road because of narrow pavements.
Avondale councillor Margaret Cooper said: “I have been told that it is only temporary – but it is still a risk. There is a blind corner in the road.
“At this time year it can be a bad road at the best of times.
“You get to a pinch point and there is almost no way to see around the corner.
“When the East Overton housing development is completed it will have to be upgraded from this temporary layout to a two-lane space.”
South Lanarkshire Council’s head of roads and transportation services, Gordon Mackay, said: “The new arrangement has been provided to reduce vehicle speeds as well as to enable pedestrians to walk safely from the new development into the town centre.
“The developer will be providing other traffic calming features in the coming months along Glassford Road.
“These features will create a safe environment for all road users.”
