Resource group invite youngsters to enjoy Minecraft-style exploits in Bothwell Road Park

- Stefanie Mccourt

Bothwell Road Park will be transformed to host a unique Minecraft-inspired adventure.

The Outlet: Play Resource group have created an outdoor game designed to encourage children to get off-screen and outside.

Young participants will be tasked with building dens, lighting campfires and even using axes.

And such was the response to an advert posted on Facebook, that both days – April 7 and 8 – quickly sold out.

Tickets for added dates on June 2 and 3 were also quickly snapped up.

Organisers have now lined up a den-building day at the park on April 11.

Jackie Meager, of Outlet: Play Resource, said: “In computer games like Minecraft and Terraria, players have to survive in a hostile environment, build their own house, hunt for their food, search for materials and fend off wandering monsters.

“Sure, children can survive in the ‘wilderness’ on the computer screen, but can they do it out in the real woods? In this unique outdoor game kids have to work together, using what they know from video games, to learn outdoor survival skills and earn points along the way.

“Playing our ‘Wildcraft Adventure’ game is a fantastic way to get video game obsessed children back in to nature.

“Just like in their favourite computer games, kids will be set a number of challenges throughout the day, and all the while be building their dens before ‘night’ falls and the monsters wake up.

“Players will light their own campfire, ‘mine’ for resources and use sharp axes; all closely supervised by experienced Forest School leaders.”

She added: “Prior to this event we will be working in partnership with the Bothwell Road Action Group to organise a clean-up of the woodland area - which has been prone to anti-social behaviour in the past and is still occasionally used for fly-tipping.”
