Homes for rent plan approved

Houses set for old Daks Simpson site

- Shirley Bartynek

Forty-eight new homes for rent are to be built in Larkhall.

AS Homes Ltd (Scotland) have been granted detailed planning permission to construct 40 semi-detached and eight terraced homes on part of the site of the former Daks Simpson factory in the town’s Carlisle Road.

The homes will be managed by Clyde Valley Housing Association and will boost the numbers of properties available for social rent in the area.

Tenure will be a mix of twoand three-bedroom properties, and parking will be available either in driveways or parking courts.

The wider side will also provide two open amenity sites and a toddler play area.

Councillor Alistair Fulton, chair of the committee, said: “The construction of new homes for the social rented market is a key provision of the Local Plan, and the application before us today will make a valuable contribution towards that aim.”

Daks Simpson was once the biggest employer in the town. They began manufacturing in Scotland in 1941 and the Strutherhill plant in Larkhall was opened in 1948 by Harold Wilson, later to become Prime Minister.

Daks was a manufacturer for Marks & Spencer for 27 years until the contract was suddenly terminated in summer 2000, leading to 450 job losses.

And 60 years of top-quality clothing manufacturing at Daks came to end on March 1, 2002.

The company was one of the biggest employers in Lanarkshire and at is peak had a workforce of more than 1600.
