Victory gives Dalziel a fighting chance of survival

Dalziel .............................. 36 Orkney ............................. 19

Dalziel have given themselves a major chance of surviving the drop from BT National League 3 after recording their first win of the season against Orkney.

The Motherwell side’s first win in 16 attempts leaves them just three points behind fellow strugglers Haddington, and four off Orkney in 10th place and relative safety.

When Orkney conceded a penalty at the ruck, Dalziel went quick and Ryan Burrell took Dalziel into the visitors’22. The ball was shipped wide from the ruck to Andrew Glover, who shrugged off tacklers to dart home and score, with Glover adding the extras for a 7-0 lead.

Dalziel then knocked the ball on inside their own 22 and Orkney seized possession.

The ball was popped from the back of the ruck to Scott Rendall, who ran in to the left of the posts, with Danny Bain converting to level, before kicking them ahead with a penalty.

A terrific move involving Kris Watters, Stephen Baird, Andy Scott, Thomas Quigley, Andrew Glover and Lee Mcwhinnie set up a score for Ryan Burrell, with Glover converting for a 14-7 lead.

Bain slotted two penalties before the sides turned at 14-13.

Dalziel attacked early in the second half and following another good move, Cameron King crossed between the posts, with Glover converting for 21-13.

Bain slotted a penalty either side of a kick from Glover, but a Dalziel move ended with Iain Davidson dotting down for the 36-19 win.
