Action call over hole lot of trouble on roads

Community council want to see an end to patching

- Mark Pirie

Strathaven and Glassford Community Council have slammed the state of the roads in Avondale, as problems with potholes continue.

The organisation’s Les Hoggan feels there have been a number of areas affecting Avondale residents.

But he highlighted Muirburn Road on the outskirts of Glassford as a major problem stretch.

The deep potholes regularly flood and become damaged in freezing conditions and have blighted motorists throughout the winter.

Mr Hoggan has even called for the road to be closed for a full repair after a number of patchup jobs by South Lanarkshire Council.

“The roads are probably as bad as they have ever been,” he told the Advertiser.

“There are a few particularly bad areas that we have spotted and have been reported to the community council. The problem on Muirburn Road has been ongoing throughout the winter.

“Every time the potholes are filled in the weather has hit. There is nothing that can be done about the weather but it seems like even a bit of rain washes away the materials they have filled it in with.

“It must be a major expenditure to go up and fill in these roads rather than re-lay them.

“You would rather they closed a road for a couple of days and sorted the problem, it shouldn’t be a constant drawn-out repair.

“It’s definitely an issue and a good example of the poor condition of some of the roads as well as the challenge facing drivers in Strathaven and Glassford.”

South Lanarkshire Council’s head of roads and transportation, gordon Mackay, said: “The council undertake regular safety inspections on all our roads. Defects identified during these inspections are repaired as necessary.

“The level of repairs undertaken each year will fluctuate, often as a consequence of the severity of winter weather conditions.

“However, the condition of our road network is surveyed annually, as it is for all 32 council areas, and these surveys confirm that South Lanarkshire’s road network has improved year on year for the last seven years.

“Freeze and thaw conditions do increase the risk of damage to road surfaces occurring.”
