Spring clean-up
Keep Udston and Glenlee wood tidy
Volunteers of the Hillhouse Community Hub will take part in an important community initiative to ‘Clean Up’ Udston and Glenlee Woods today (Thursday, April 12).
With support from Community Links, volunteers have organised the litter clean up under the banner of the nationwide ‘Clean Up Scotland’ campaign, which is run by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.
People of all ages are being asked to volunteer just a few hours of their time to take part in the event and help clean up ‘The Woods’ which are a beautiful nature trail used by families, keen walkers and dog owners.
The aim of this clean-up is to keep the trail litter free and encourage people to bin their rubbish. A fun and interactive Easter egg hunt will also be available for children and everyone who comes along will receive a special treat at the Hillstop Café in Hillhouse and Earnock Community Centre.
Leigh Williams, Hillhouse Community Group volunteer said: “Litter blights our landscape.
“The impact is not only visual – it reduces pride in our area and studies have shown that messy places can increase fear of crime and affect our health.
“It also costs us all a lot of money – the council has to spend our council tax money cleaning up after irresponsible people, and we’d rather this money went on other services or stayed in our pockets.”
Derek Robertson, chief executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “Hillhouse residents are to be commended for the difference it is making to Udston and Glenlee Woods. The members take great pride in their surroundings and people like them are the foundation of our Clean Up Scotland campaign.
“At Keep Scotland Beautiful we want to make Scotland clean, green and more sustainable.
“Community Links are doing a fantastic job to help us achieve this goal.”
If you are interested in coming along please meet at the entrance to the woods across from Jock Stein Centre at noon.
