Kind Bothwell Bridge save the day for under-10 side after‘beast from East’wrecked their trip north

- Kirsten Mcstay

An English under-10s football team has thanked the Bothwell Bridge Hotel for putting them up for the weekend in order for them to take part in a tournament.

The Farmers Colts, based in Liverpool, Merseyside, were originally supposed to travel to a hotel in East Kilbride for a game in March but due the ‘Beast from the East’ they could not make it.

However, when team coach Paul Mckendrick asked to change the dates of their stay to suit the new match date, the hotel showed him the red card, leaving the team £770 out of pocket.

This then caused a storm on social media and attracted attention from all over the country.

Paul posted: “Absolutely disgusted. This hotel chain have taken £770 from an under-10 football team from Liverpool.

“A team who have been charity fund raising to play matches in Scotland but couldn’t get there because of the weather conditions this weekend. Absolutely disgusting. They wouldn’t move the dates for the visit. What is the world coming to?”

That’s when the Bothwell Bridge Hotel stepped in and offered the team two nights stay with them freeof-charge.

Paul then posted on Facebook: “I cannot believe the hospitality from this unbelievably generous hotel (Bothwell Bridge).

“After all our problems previously, these guys renewed my belief in human spirit by treating the Farmers Colts under-10s like VIPS.”

Bothwell Bridge manager Mark Taylor said: “We were honoured to have the under-10s Farmers Colts Football Team staying with us over the weekend.

“When I heard the team were in need of somewhere to stay it was a no-brainer really.

“To see the kids happy made me happy and that’s all that matters! It’s nice to be nice.

“Thanks for staying with us boys. Good luck with the rest of the football season, we will be supporting you from Scotland!”
