Super-sub Jordan Moore stepped up off the bench and fired Lanark United to a 1-0 win over Bellshill Athletic in the Central League Cup second round.

Midfielder Shaun Gallagher provided the through-ball that split the Bellshill defence, and Moore fired a shot past keeper Chris Patrick and into the far corner of the net for a holiday weekend win.

Moore climbed off the bench in 61 minutes and within 22 minutes had bagged the winner.

Lanark, who wrapped up their points programme with three league wins on the trot, now face Super First Division side Cumbernauld United in the third round at Moor Park on Saturday.

Ronan Kearney and Calum Strang had early chances for Lanark, as Bellshill briefly emerged as the more attack-minded side, with Connor Brannigan, Jordan Jeffrey and Allesandro Savarese going close.

Then, in 35 minutes, Dan Mchugh, Grant Gaffney and Kearney all had shots parried in a packed goalmouth.

David Shaw scooped over a free kick and Lee Nichol shot over as Lanark hit back, with Jordan Callan shooting over and Kearney heading a Moore cross wide before twice firing just wide.

Lanark manager Colin Slater said: “I’m pleased to win as, personnel-wise, we had injuries in the background and were tight on numbers.

“Three of the boys who played have been out for three weeks, so I gave a chance to some young boys who are on the books, and their attitude was excellent.

“We scored a good goal, but missed a few chances.

“At least we’re creating chances, and we will score.”

Bellshill boss Robert Sneddon said: “Realistically, Lanark deserved to win.

“For us, it wasn’t our best game, but we were down to the bare bones – the only substitutes we had were myself and my assistant Gary Shearer. It was disappointing, but it has been a good season overall.

“We set our target at the start of the season to win promotion, we’ve done that, so it has been pretty positive overall.”

On Monday, Blantyre Vics beat Renfrew 2-0 in the Central League Cup second round, with Declan Brown and Sam Mckenzie scoring their first-half goals.

In third-round action on Saturday, Larkhall Thistle travel to Rossvale, while Thorniewood United host Shettleston.

Shotts Bon Accord host Whitletts Vics in the New Coin Automatics West of Scotland Cup second round on Saturday.
