Hamilton go into their last game of the season at Motherwell on Saturday knowing that they have nearly done enough to secure Premiership football for a fifth season.
Though they can be arithmetically caught and pulled into the play-off slot, it’s unlikely; it would take a 14-goal swing, with play-off occupants Partick Thistle visiting Dundee.
Accies captain Dougie Imrie is taking nothing for granted, and says if and when safety is assured, they must take a serious look at their leaky defence.
From the 37 games played in the top flight this season, Hamilton have scored 47 goals and conceded 65. At this stage of the season they have scored more than both 11th-placed Partick Thistle and Ross County in 12th, but conceded four more goals than both.
“It was disappointing tonight, same old story, two goals again conceded,” said Imrie. “I think we’ve scored nearly 50 goals, we shouldn’t be in this position, and you can see where our problem lies. The amount of goals we’ve conceded has killed us.
“The manager is disappointed and frustrated with that, and no wonder. It’s our job, he sets us up well, but it’s the same thing every week.
“It’s the same mistakes that keep happening and you can see why he’s frustrated. Us, as players, have got to start stepping up to the mark and dealing with that better.
